Since starting in 2012 in London, this meeting has evolved into the biggest international cilia meeting covering many aspects of cilia including their structure, function and most importantly, relationship to disease. Groundbreaking work of the last two decades has revealed that mutations in genes encoding for ciliary proteins are causative for a large number of rare human diseases and syndromes, nowadays summarized as ciliopathies. A hallmark of most ciliopathies is the development of cystic kidneys caused by altered function and proliferation of tubular epithelial cells. In fact, almost all disease genes of different types of (poly)cystic kidney disease (ADPKD/ARPKD/NPHP) encode for ciliary Proteins.
